Retinal Testing & Vision Diagnosis with the Amsler Grid

Detect Damage Including Macular Degeneration

Doctors use the Amsler grid as yet another tool to aid in the detection and diagnosis of age-related macular degeneration and other eye problems.  It can reveal vision problems that result from damage to the macula, which is the central part of the retina or the optic nerve.

This is quick, simple and can be used by anyone.  To test, check each eye separately – one at a time. Simply focus your gaze on the small dot in the center of the grid. Patients with a macular disease may see wavy lines or some lines may be missing.

What Is An Amsler Grid?

An Amsler grid is square block of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines with a center focus point which is used to test a patient’s central visual field. Swiss ophthalmologist Marc Amsler, created the now famous Amsler grid.
